Area description
Located just 4.5 miles West of Looe and about 24 miles west of Plymouth, Polperro is a maze of lanes, alley ways and slate hung white washed houses which lead down to an enchanting, truly unspoilt harbour. A haven for fishing boats at least since the 13thCentury and probably much earlier, it is still a working port where boats unload their catch with pots and nets lying about the quays. A wide variety of Pubs restaurants and tea rooms are found in the lanes that weave along behind the harbour. During the summer you can take half hour boat trips along the coast towards Fowey. During the Winter smoke from countless open fires hangs in the air giving a reminder of times past.
From the harbour the cliff walks lead in one direction to Looe (about 5 miles) and in the other to Polruan (about 8 miles) where you can take the ferry across to Fowey.
Our cottage is located in the heart of the old part of the village just 70 yards from the harbour and within very close proximity to the many eating and drinking hostelries. There are a total of five pubs in the village and a large variety of possibilities for eating, although some are closed during the low season.
Although many of Polperro’s streets are so narrow they are banned or inaccessible to motor vehicles, it is possible to stop your car outside Little Laney to enable easy unloading and loading. This is a distinct advantage in Polperro.
Polperro’s conservation area status means there are no amusement arcades or discotheques. Evening entertainment in the village tends to centre around the restaurants and pubs, where one occasionally encounters some live music.
Polperro is easily accessible by road. The M5 leads into the dual carriageway of the A38 to Plymouth where it crosses the Tamar bridge leaving just a half an hour drive to Polperro. From London Paddington trains run to Liskeard from where a branch line takes you the short distance to Looe. A short cab ride from Polperro.
Polperro is a wonderful place to relax and let the world go by. But if you feel the need to get out and about the majority of Cornwall is accessible by car within about an hour.
